Kicking off our Welsh Summer with Sunshine and Waves!
The weather and wave gods were on our side this weekend with a fantastic reminder of why you don't have to leave the UK for an amazing outdoor adventure! Check out the pics below of our happy crew of Surf Sistas this in Llangennith, Wales. Beginners riding the white water with Mali and improvers charging small green peelers with Gwen :)
We have more Welsh fun coming up in July - sign up to our beginner or improver weekends or our 5 day White to Green course.
If you have never been to Llangennith before it is super easy. Either drive direct to the Gower or hop on a train to Swansea and then take a bus or taxi hop to Llangennith village. There are some great places to stay from a campsite right next to the beach to B&Bs or self catering cottages. Its such a beautiful place its no wonder it was voted the 3rd best beach in Europe

Cycle Surf Count Down: How to fix a puncture!
The Big Friday cycle surf is fast approaching and although the Big Friday crew will be on hand for puncture repairs, we are girl guides at heart and like to 'be prepared'! So when we saw this great little vid by the girls at Adventurely on how to fix a bike puncture we had to share it .. thanks Adventurely, no excuses for us not to keep on riding now ..

"One day we were dreaming of the things that made us happiest in life ... "
5 years ago our friend Anna Glowinski, bicycle whizz, fashion designer and Cycle Show presenter on the tellybox, asked if we wanted to go 'cycle surfing' in France. She had seen someone in the US selling cycle mules for surfboards and wanted to give them a go .. 'hello yes' we said and off we all went on our first ever cycle surf trip ..
Fast forward a year and we were ready to go with our first ever Big Friday Cycle Surfari, now amazingly in its 5th year! The Cycle Surfari is our annual cycle from Hossegor to Lacanau, up the South West coast of France. Think shady cycle paths through the pine forests & French villages, glassy waves surfed at dawn, hearty meals cooked on the camp stove, sleeping under canvas and stars, mile after mile of golden sand, sunburnt noses, sandy feet and salty hair, off the grid, good company and good times!
"One day we were dreaming of the things that make us happiest in life, the great outdoors, cycling, surfing, camping, friends. Big Friday took on the challenge of a totally new-concept holiday in which participants cycle up the West Coast of France using surf trailers to carry their boards. The joy of this is that every day there was a new beach to discover, including some beaches that aren’t accessible by car. It meant that every day was spent soaking up the sun and the fresh air and Big Friday’s impeccable customer service provided a meal at the camp site, ready cooked with tents up by the time you arrive! It’s a glorious, glorious, unique holiday event." Anna Glowinski, Best Day Ever Creative

Anna G led her own successful women's cycle brand for the past 5 years but recently left to launch her own creative agency .. although we deeply loved her stylish cycle tights, we can't help but be a little bit pleased she is going to be dreaming up big ideas for a living! Good luck with your new venture Anna!

In the outside .. welcome to the world of grounding
The practice of yoga is one of integration, mind and body, if we are going down the simple, 30 second elevator pitch definition. Anyway, it's on my mat where I find my place to put everything back together, or at least I remember that they weren’t actually separate to begin with.
Long proclaimed are the benefits of Yoga, and surfing for that matter or any other physical activity in order to keep us healthy. Now health, thats a funny word, what does it mean to be healthy? Well, in my view, it’s not just an absence of disease or ailment, but a state of balance. And nowhere do I find my balance more than being outside.
Yoga, surfing, snowboarding, running, walking, swimming you name it, just put me outside and I already feel better. I breathe easier, my body loses it’s holding patterns, I soften and I can actually feel those little electrons inside of me settling back down in to a slightly more balanced arrangement.
Now I’m no doctor, but I know what makes me feel good. Outside, feet on ground and in the water even better. And lo and behold I learn recently this is an actual thing, an actual real life thing, with a whole host of health giving, life enhancing benefits. Welcome to the world of Grounding. Grounding or Earthing, something that used to happen naturally, so old it didn’t even have a name (I think with all our cleverness we just get more stupid).
The idea is that we, human beings, are conductive things, able to conduct electricity. And all the crap that makes us feel icky, free radicals FYI, are usually positively charged and the causes of disease and illness. The Earth in comparison is negatively charged and by connecting to it we can balance. Ta da! Now I don’t know if any actual real life science backs this up, but purported benefits include:
- Lowers blood pressure and regulates heart rate
- Improves circulation
- Promotes deep sleep and increases energy
- Reduces inflammation
- Regulates hormones (inc. hormones we associate with the stress response)
- Eases chronic pain and eases muscular soreness
- Improves recovery time post injury
Now we can all do this for free, or course, by going outside and taking off our kicks and sticking our feet in the mud, we can walk around barefoot, or even just sitting on the ground. Water is even better apparently and sea water with all that salt and minerals is just pure magic when restoring health, just ask anyone who now spends more time in the ocean if they sleep better or do you when on holiday? Skin on warm sand, soft water lapping feet or waves moving through you… Mmmmmm… sorry I seem to have digressed.
So, going outside, an actual thing huh? Would’ve thought? Not just a space we move through but a destination all in itself. Destination health and balance. All aboard!

"Absolutely bursting with happiness"
![]() |
pure stoke |
"I have a pain in my face from smiling and laughing so much, often for no other extraordinary reason other than being in the sea. A common sight over the weekend was me laughing uncontrollably by myself and to myself in the sea...absolutely bursting with happiness."
Aoife, Ireland after a Surf Sistas Weekend in Cornwall
At Surf Sistas HQ we think surfing should be available on the National Health Service - the pure unfettered delight, or stoke as we call it, of learning to surf will soon have you in its grasp. The joy of being in the ocean, feeling fresh air and hopefully some sun on your cheeks, rising to the challenge of balancing on your surfboard, laughing with new friends, feeling the energy of the wave propel you to shore .. a new passion is born!
This summer we have beginner weekends in both Cornwall and Wales, every month from June to September, so plenty of opportunities to come down and give surfing a try! Our top Surfing GB and ISA qualified instructors will cover the basics that will have you riding your first waves in no time, including understanding your equipment, the conditions and how to stay safe in the water; how to position yourself on the board, catch waves and ultimately to pop up to that classic wave riding stance.
Click here to find out more about Cornwall and here for Wales .. we are always available here for questions and we can't wait to share our love of surfing with you this summer!
Summer 2014 Dates:
Cornwall: 16-18 June | 4-6 July | 15-17 Aug | 19-21 Sept
Wales: 14/15 June | 19/20 July | 13/14 Sept
We can't talk about benefits of surf stoke without a shout out to some amazing charities in the South West who are using surfing to make a real difference - Surf Action work with Military Veterans and their families, and the Wave Project provide surf therapy for young people facing challenges. Take a look at what they do and get involved if you can.
